About this IMS Online Retreat

Tuesday, July 21, 2026 - Tuesday, July 28, 2026

Through the natural unfolding of mindfulness, we learn to rest in presence and attune to the rhythms of body, heart, and mind. As clarity deepens, we begin to recognize the ways we turn away from connection within ourselves, with one another, and with the world.

This silent retreat offers a refuge for practice and a space to remember what truly sustains us. Together, supported by sangha and the rhythm of retreat, we explore how mindfulness and insight illuminate both our inner landscape and the challenges of daily life. Rooted in simplicity, this retreat invites us to meet our experience with devotion, curiosity, and kindness—and to walk the path of insight with steadiness and faith.

This online experience will be a livestream of the Rooted in Presence retreat with Devin Berry, Shinmu Tamori Gibson and Neesha Patel. Meditation instructions and Dharma talks will be broadcast live from the IMS Meditation Hall. Please note that there is no direct interaction with the onsite teachers during this online retreat.

This course is open to everyone.

This retreat begins on Tuesday, July 21 at 7:15 pm ET and concludes Tuesday, July 28 at 10:45 am ET. A full home retreat schedule and instructions will be offered.

Rev. Shinmu Tamori Gibson (fka Jozen) lives to study, nourish, and offer contemplative heart-body-mind practices and spaces rooted in compassionate wellness, anti-oppression and interdependent liberation for all beings through the Buddhadharma. Shinmu is a Sotō Zen monastic priest ordained on November 12, 2023 by their teacher, Osho Zenju Earthlyn Manuel of the Suzuki Roshi lineage. Honoring the wisdom and compassion of all teachers and future generations, with the ancestors of their Black Japanese heritage, Shinmu highlights their mother – Akimi, and their lay dharma teacher – Monitsu Pamela Weiss. They began formal meditation practice while living in Japan, joined by Early Buddhism, Theravada practice centering Vipassana and Thai Forest lineages. Shinmu is a graduate of the four-year Insight Meditation Society (IMS) – Insight Retreat Center (IRC) Dharma Teacher Training program. Certifications and embodiment studies in Yoga, Qigong, psychology and emergency medicines supplements the fluidity of this life and clarification of the ennobling truths.

Neesha Patel Neesha Patel has been drawn to the teachings of the Buddha ever since she first read comic books about the Buddha as a child. She has been fortunate to have been infused by and practiced the dhamma in both Asia and the US. Her practice has been influenced by the guidance of many wonderful teachers, including Sayadaw U Tejaniya and Ajahn Sucitto. Though her dhamma practice primarily derives from Vipassana traditions, she has benefited deeply from wisdom expressed in the Zen/Chan and Tibetan Buddhist traditions.  She loves both intensive longer retreat practice, as well as daily life practice, and is inspired by the radical inclusivity of the dhamma. Neesha currently resides in Northern California. She is a graduate of Spirit Rock’s Dedicated Practitioner Program, and is a current participant in the 2017-2021 IMS Teacher Training Program.
