That our practice happens in our bodies is a fact so obvious we sometimes miss its importance. This program supports waking up to and growing our understanding of the embodied nature of mindfulness practice, through guided practices of mindful movement and pause. Here you will learn how to cultivate a wise, kind relationship with the direct experiences of body, and how to move from identifying with the body toward clearly recognizing it as a vehicle for practice, a changing array of sensations, and appreciating this remarkable expression of nature.

The Buddha taught four postures: sitting, standing, reclining and walking/moving. This class incorporates a harmonious blend of all four, exploring the contributions each can make to integrating meditation into our lives. Thanks to the live online platform, you will have the opportunity to engage in each session in real-time, following clear instructions and demonstrations. Group discussions will enhance the learning process. Recordings will be provided for further practice and exploration.

Each posture offers unique possibilities to support mindfulness. Standing invites you to explore gentle and flowing movements that anchor your attention in the present moment and cultivate a deeper connection with body, breath, and environment while investigating the elemental nature of experience. Gentle sitting sequences offer preparation and support for seated meditation. During reclining practices, there’s a chance to experience a fuller connection with the earth and the natural rhythms of breath while integrating the wholesome qualities of wakefulness and calm, moment to moment. All of the postures contribute to our practice in daily life.

Throughout this online course, you will be encouraged to approach your experiences with self-compassion, curiosity, and an open-hearted attitude. Breath awareness and body scans will also be offered to support you in observing the ever-changing nature of your thoughts and emotions with non-judgmental awareness. The live online format ensures that you can participate from the comfort of your own home while receiving clear instructions and support.

You will leave the class with a deeper understanding of how movement, stillness, and awareness intertwine on our path towards greater well-being, balance, and awareness. Whether you are a beginner or have an established practice, this course provides an opportunity to cultivate mindfulness and embodiment in your daily life, at home, with an expert teacher and the support of the IMS live online platform.

Meet Your Teacher

Éowyn Ahlstrom

Éowyn Ahlstrom grew up a stone’s throw away from the then emerging Insight Meditation Society. She left the area to go to college, and looked around the world for about a decade, searching for a way to live. In her journeys, Éowyn first discovered meditation through the yoga tradition. But, to her happy surprise, that way to live she was searching for turned out to be very close to home – at IMS, with the liberating practices of vipassana and metta meditation and the profound wisdom of the early Buddhist teachings. During the past two decades, she has attended many IMS retreats, both at the Retreat Center and the Forest Refuge, and has often led mindful movement sessions for retreats too. Éowyn has served as a staff member and volunteer here, and is currently glad to be receiving mentorship from Kamala Masters and Greg Scharf as she continues her ever deepening relationship with practicing and teaching dhamma. Her contributions to the broader field include the development of MBSR2 at the Mindfulness Center at Brown University; teaching community mindfulness, meditation and yoga programs at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, the Center for Mindfulness and Compassion at the Cambridge Health Alliance; and teaching for many other organizations in the region as well. She loves consulting with both individuals and organizations to provide pragmatic guidance and support for integrating contemplative awareness into 21st century living. Éowyn is also a poet, and the author of Mindscapes: Practice Poems. In addition to her master’s degree in health and wellness, along the way Éowyn has received qualifications as a massage therapist, yoga teacher (E-RYT 500), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher, and Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) teacher. For more about her work and practice, please visit her website, Middle Path Healing Arts.
